Frankfurt am Main - Altstadt

In the middle of the 14th century, the structure of Frankfurt was formed with a few representa- tive public squares, many small alleys and the city gates. In the past, as now, the center was formed by the Römerberg as a market square with the „Römer“ (town hall) from which the city has been ruled for over 600 years. From here the former coronation path leads to the Dom in the eastern Old Town. This Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomewwas the coronation site of German emperors and kings for around 200 years until the end of the 18th century. After their severe destruction during the Second World War the town hall, the cathedral, the Paulskirche and other historical buildings of the Römerberg and surroundings were gradu- ally rebuilt over decades in the 20th century. Rückblick · Looking back ... Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts wurde die Struktur von Frankfurt mit einigen repräsentativen Plät- zen, vielen kleinen Gassen und den Stadttoren ausgeformt. Das Zentrum bildete früher wie heute der Römerberg als Marktplatz mit dem »Römer« (Rathaus), von dem aus seit über 600 Jahren bis heute die Stadt regiert wird. Von hier führt der ehemalige Krönungsweg zum Dom in die östliche Altstadt. Der Kaiserdom St. Bartho- lomäus war bis Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts rund 200 Jahre lang Krönungsstätte deutscher Kaiser und Könige. Nach ihrer immensen Zerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden das Rathaus, der Dom, die Paulskirche und weitere historische Gebäude im Umfeld des Römerbergs als Rekon- struktionen über Jahrzehnte im 20. Jahrhundert nach und nach wieder errichtet. 4
