Sehenswürdigkeiten und Events
Eine besondere Note erhält Darmstadt durch die Förderung
der Künste. Diese hat mit Großherzog Ernst Ludwig und der
Gründung der Künstlerkolonie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts
eine lange Tradition. Darmstadt ist Zentrum des europäischen
Jugendstils neben Brüssel, Paris, Wien, Glasgow und Barcelona.
Auf einem Hügel ragt das Wahrzeichen Darmstadts in den
Himmel: der Hochzeitsturm. Die Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe,
die Ausstellungsgebäude, der Hochzeitsturm, das Museum
Künstlerkolonie und die prächtigen Künstlerhäuser aus der Zeit
des Jugendstils geben diesem Musenhügel sein unverwechsel-
bares Flair.
Heute beeindruckt der Ort mit bundesweit und international
geachteten Ausstellungen im Institut Mathildenhöhe. Interna
tional und überregional anerkannte Kulturinstitute der Literatur,
der bildenden Kunst, der Musik und das Staatstheater sind
mit ihren hohen Standards Markenzeichen der Stadt.
Besondere Veranstaltungen

Im Mai laden die Jugendstiltage und das Illuminationsfest
auf Darmstadts Stadtkrone ein: Die Wissenschaftsstadt
Darmstadt Marketing GmbH initiiert gemeinsam mit Kultur
institutionen, Gastronomie, Hotellerie und Einzelhandel
Aktionen, um Darmstadts Jugendstil rund um die Mathilden
höhe ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit zu rücken.

In den Sommerferien lädt „Wissen ist cool“ in Zusammen
arbeit mit dem Kulturwerk Centralstation Kinder und Jugend
liche zu vielen spielerischen Elementen und spannenden
Experimenten rund ums Thema Wissenschaften ein.

Der Darmstädter Weihnachtsmarkt bietet vom Marktplatz
bis zum Schloss vor allem Kunsthandwerkliches – auch aus
Darmstadts 15 Partnerstädten. Glühwein- und Lebkuchenduft,
ein vielfältiges musikalisches Programm, Stadtführungen und
ein Kinderprogramm runden das Programm ab. Kleinere
Weihnachtsmärkte gibt es auch in den vier Stadtteilen.

Sights and Events
Darmstadt has a unique flair due to its promotion of the arts.
This long standing tradition started with Grand Duke Ernst Lud
wig and the establishment of the artists’ colony at the beginning
of the 20th century. Darmstadt is a centre of European art
nouveau as are Brussels, Paris, Vienna, Glasgow and Barcelona.
On a hilltop, the landmark of Darmstadt rises up into the sky:
the “Hochzeitsturm”. The artists’ colony Mathildenhöhe, the
exhibition building, the wedding tower, the Museum Artists’
Colony and the magnificent houses of artists from the time of
art nouveau give their unmistakable flair to this hill of muses.
Today the Institut Mathildenhöhe impresses country-wide and
internationally with respected exhibitions. Whether internatio-
nally or supra-regionally, Darmstadt has recognised cultural
institutions of literature, of the forming arts, of music and the
national theatre; with their high standards these are the land-
marks of the city.
Special Events

In May visitors are invited to the art nouveau days and the
Illuminations Festival at Darmstadt’s main landmark; Darmstadt
Marketing GmbH initiates together with cultural institutions,
gastronomy, hotels and the retail industries activities, in order
to put Darmstadt’s art nouveau surrounding the Mathildenhöhe
in the centre of attention.

During the summer holidays an exhibition named “Knowledge
is cool”, which takes place in co-operation with the cultural in
stitution “Centralstation”, shows children and adults alike many
playful elements and exciting experiments all around science.

The Christmas market in Darmstadt offers arts & crafts from
the market place to the castle – even from Darmstadt’s 15 twin
cities. The smell of mulled wine and gingerbread, a diverse
musical program, city guided tours and a children’s program
round off the festivities. There are also smaller Christmas
markets in the city’s four districts.
